Posing for the Camera
by Harriet Shepard & Lenore Meyer
Second Edition

VoxClarus Press is proud to announce its upcoming re-publication of a classic book on the fundamentals of posing. This masterpiece has been unavailable for nearly four decades.

Book IllustrationCan a book that was first published before personal computers, cell phones, and the Internet still be valid? Absolutely!

Two words tell us why: excellence and timelessness. Harriett Shepard and Lenore Meyer wrote the definitive book on photographic posing. They were masters of the art from both sides of the camera. They wrote not just for photographers, but for art directors and models as well. They wrote not of fads, styles and trends, but of fundamental concepts.

Then they had a brilliant idea. They developed a technique to illustrate the book with silhouetted forms of actual living models. Drawings could never have captured the life and spirit of the art of posing. Continuous tone photographs could not have shown the essences of posing nearly so clearly—clothing, hairstyles and even the roundness of chiaroscuro would have distracted from the fundamentals. Posing for the Camera is still vitally alive. Of course, the basic equipment of posing is unchanged; a human body is still a human body, and a lens is still a lens. The human form still presents itself to a camera as it always has. But more than that, Shepard and Meyer’s Book Illustrationbrilliant analysis and clear communication still work on all levels.

This edition will be extensively revised. The language and ideas will be brought into the 21st century, and many new illustrations are being created. We have a clear path to follow. Fortunately, Shepard and Meyer gave explicit descriptions of their illustrative techniques, so we're able to create new art that complements the authors' original work.

We believe that VoxClarus is restoring a valuable piece of art.

Harriett Shepard and Lenore Meyer were masters of the art of posing. They Book Illustrationstudied it until it yielded its problems and its secrets. They presented their understanding brilliantly.

Now, new generations of image-makers will use what Shepard and Meyer taught to create art that would have astounded them.
